Bulls' Mirotic breaks jaw in fight with teammate
Chicago Bulls forward Nikola Mirotic is out indefinitely after suffering facial fractures and a concussion suffered in an altercation with teammate Bobby Portis at practice Tuesday.
The two players were involved in a shoving match before Mirotic was hit in the face by Portis, according to a source.
Mirotic was hospitalized Tuesday for the injury, but has been released, according to a league source. The Bulls announced that surgery is likely for Mirotic.
In a statement, the Bulls said they are evaluating disciplinary action.
The 26-year-old Mirotic averaged 10.6 points and 5.5 rebounds last season and was expected to start for Chicago this season. He signed a two-year deal with $12.5 million guaranteed this season to stay with the Bulls
Portis, 22, averaged 6.8 points and 4.6 rebounds last season and was battling Mirotic for the team’s starting power forward spot.
Chicago opens the season Thursday night in Toronto.
