The fifty NBA greatest players of all time were chosen in 1996 to honor the 50th anniversary of the league. The players were presented during the halftime of the 1997 All-Star game at Gund Arena in Cleveland.
Never before has the NBA seen a more remarkable collection of talents standing side by side as it had when the 50 greatest assembled together (minus Jerry West, who was scheduled to have ear surgery; Pete Maravich, who had died in 1988; and Shaquille O’Neal, who was then recovering from a knee injury).
It has been over 19 years and almost from the moment the list was revealed, the debate never stopped.
If the NBA were to put together a Top 70 team right now, who would deserve to be on that list?
In order to come up with the next 20 players deserving to be on the Top 70 list, here are a few ground rules:
- Players who were not originally on the Top 50 team but perhaps deserved to be were eligible players to use.
- Any current players added to the list had to be in the NBA for a minimum of five years…and even then had to have some major achievements on their resume already.
Below you will see a list of names in alphabetical order that we think could be the front-runners to be in the next 20 list. You are encouraged to add new names if your favorite player is not in the list and they will automatically be added.
